Achieving Optimal Signal Integrity with Hybrid High Frequency Multilayer PCBs

  • August 03. 2023
As technology continues to evolve, the need for more advanced and reliable PCB materials has become increasingly important. One material that has gained popularity in recent years is the hybrid high frequency multilayer PCB, which combines the properties of two different materials to create a PCB with superior performance. In this article, we will explore the benefits of a 6-layer hybrid PCB made on 12mil 0.305mm RO4003C+ FR-4 hybrid PCB.

Introducing our newly shipped 6-layer hybrid PCB, designed with high-quality materials and manufactured using a lead-free process for optimal performance. The board measures 76mm x 76mm with a finished thickness of 1.1mm and a finished copper weight of 1.0 oz (1.4 mils) across all layers.

Constructed using RO4003C hydrocarbon ceramic laminates and FR-4 Epoxy Glass, this PCB is built to last with a temperature range of -40℃ to +85℃. The stackup includes RO4003C dielectric layers, internal ground layers, and prepreg layers to ensure reliable signal transmission and impedance control.

This 12mil RO4003C+FR4 hybrid PCB boasts a minimum trace/space of 4/4 mils and a minimum hole size of 0.2mm, with no blind or buried vias. The surface finish is Electroless Nickle Immersion Gold (ENIG) with top silkscreen in white and a matt blue top and bottom solder mask. The solder pads do not have silkscreen, and via plating thickness is 1 mil.

With 73 components and a total of 94 pads, including 43 thru-hole pads, 39 top SMT pads, and 12 bottom SMT pads, this PCB has a total of 62 vias and 32 nets. Impedance control is maintained with a 50 ohm top layer and 20mil single end reference layer 2.

Understanding the Advantages of RO4003C+ FR-4 in a 6-Layer PCB

The use of RO4003C hydrocarbon ceramic laminates in PCB design has gained popularity due to its high thermal conductivity, low dielectric loss, and low signal loss. It is an ideal material for high-frequency applications that require minimal signal loss and high signal integrity. In contrast, FR-4 PCBs have been a popular choice due to their low cost and ease of availability.

A 6-layer hybrid PCB made on 12mil 0.305mm RO4003C+FR-4 Hybrid PCB combines the advantages of both materials to create a PCB with superior properties. The RO4003C is used for the power and ground layers, while the FR-4 is used for the signal layers. This combination allows for minimal signal loss and high signal integrity, while also being cost-effective.

Achieving Reliable Signal Transmission with Hybrid High Frequency Multilayer PCBs

The use of RO4003C in the power and ground layers also allows for better thermal management. The high thermal conductivity of RO4003C allows for efficient heat dissipation, which is critical in applications with high power dissipation. The use of FR-4 for the signal layers also allows for easier fabrication and lower cost.

Design Considerations for Hybrid High Frequency Multilayer PCBs

Designing and manufacturing a 6-layer hybrid PCB made on 12mil 0.305mm RO4003C and FR-4 PCB requires careful consideration of factors such as trace and space widths, hole sizes, and layer stackup. It is important to work with a PCB manufacturer that has experience in designing and manufacturing hybrid PCBs to ensure optimal performance.

The Benefits of Hybrid High Frequency Multilayer PCBs for Signal Integrity

The benefits of a 6-layer hybrid PCB made on 12mil 0.305mm RO4003C and FR-4 PCB make it an excellent choice for high-frequency applications, such as telecommunications, aerospace, and military applications. Its advanced design and manufacturing capabilities ensure that it can meet even the most demanding performance requirements.

In conclusion, the high frequency multilayer PCB 6-layer hybrid PCB made on 12mil RO4003C and FR-4 hybridPCB combines the advantages of both materials to create a PCB with superior performance. Its minimal signal loss, high signal integrity, and efficient thermal management make it an excellent choice for high-frequency applications. As the demand for advanced and reliable PCB materials continues to grow, the use of hybrid PCBs is poised to play an increasingly important role in driving innovation and advancing high-speed and high-frequency electronics.
